Megan Hahs, a Providence Hall senior, was awarded the Jack Davis/Wallace Foundation Art Scholarship by the Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara. The award provides $2000 toward Megan’s college education in art or an art-related major.

“Winning the art scholarship is a great honor,” said Megan. “It lets me know that I am not just doing art for a myself, but that it is good enough to be recognized by professional artists all around our community.”

Mr. James Daly, art teacher at Providence Hall, is quite pleased with his student’s achievement. “This is pretty neat,” he said, with typical understatement. “Megan is a gifted artist. I heard that the judges were most impressed with her painting technique.”

In addition to meeting general scholarship requirements of high grades and community service, Megan submitted a portfolio of artwork for judging. Only 20 of the approximately 100 applicants received scholarship awards, which were presented at a January reception and show of winners’ works.

Students receiving awards, their families, and many scholarship donors attended the reception. Megan’s particular award, the Jack Davis award, is a memorial grant, so she was not able to personally thank her scholarship donor, although she would have liked to. ”People told me he was a very detail-oriented artist based in Santa Barbara,” she said.

Megan’s pride in her award goes beyond the personal to include her school. “I was very proud to represent Providence Hall and our art program among bigger art programs, such as the Santa Barbara High School VADA (Visual Arts & Design) program, and to show the community that even though our school is small, we are very mighty.”  Megan Hahs with her award-winning artwork
