Senior Thesis Project finalists announced

January 23, 2012 by Elaine Rottman

Austin Harris, Hannah Sommers, and Kai Sheets are the finalists in the Providence Hall Senior Thesis Project.

Congratulations to seniors Kai Sheets, Hannah Sommers, and Austin Harris on being selected as the three finalists in the Senior Thesis Project. This program provides Providence Hall seniors an opportunity to complete research under a faculty mentor on a topic of their choice. The program culminates with a final paper that is presented and defended before a faculty panel. The top three papers will be presented orally before invited members of the Santa Barbara community.

Mr. Chris Elwood, humanities teacher and Senior Thesis Project advisor, comments, “All the students in the Class of 2012 worked hard and produced quality research and oral defenses; they all deserve recognition and praise. The three selected as finalists stood apart for their depth, presentation, and overall excellence.”

Kai Sheets’s project, “Seeds of a Generation,” is a compelling and informative ethical discussion of stem cell research. Hannah Sommers’s paper, “Social Landslide,” is an intriguing economic and political discussion concerning how currency instability and inflation helped give rise to Hitler’s Nazism. Austin Harris’s project, “Photography’s Impact on the World,” displays several well-known war photographs and examines their impact on social justice and public opinion.

The three finalists will present their projects to the Providence Hall community on Friday, March 9, beginning at 8:25 am and finishing by 9:15 am. All who are interested are invited to attend the presentation.
